Shaykh Salah Badeer
First Khutbah
Dear Muslims…
Congratulations on the month or Ramadan whose sun has risen upon
enlightenment, and whose crescent has appeared and brought forth joy
Congratulations on the month of Ramadan whose every single angle has
brought a pleasant odor which has adorned its nights with its magnificent
aroma.
Congratulations on this dear and beloved visitor month, this honorable
noble guest, congratulations on this great season of gain, fasting and
Taraweeh prayer as worshippers return to praying at the two holy
mosques as well as at local mosques, after a year of quarantine due to the
pandemic. O Allah, all thanks and gratitude to You for your abundant
blessings and favors, and all thanks belongs to You for endless and
ceaseless giving.
Dear Muslims: –
The legislated fasting is to refrain from that which affects one’s fasting
from the second dawn to sunset. Allah the Most Mighty says (And eat and
drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the
black thread [of night])
Young boys should be ordered to fast if they were able to do so, so that
they would practice and get used to fasting, however if they were not able
to fast, then they must not be ordered to do that which they could not
bear.
Whoever was not able to fast due to old age and an illness that has not
been cured, he must feed a poor person on behalf of each day in which he
did not fast, this is according to the most authentic sayings of the
scholars.
As for the sick person who fears that his illness might worsen, prolong his
healing period , slows his healing or that the illness might return to him,
then, it is permissible for him to not fast, but if he exerts himself and fasts,
then his fasting is valid and he will be rewarded, however, he has
committed an act that is disliked, because he has harmed himself and
abandoned Allah’s concession to him.
Every illness that does not affect one’s fasting such as toothache,
laceration, abscess and such diseases are not permissible to break one’s
fasting for.
It is permissible for travelers to break their fast whether they have
encountered difficulties or not, and breaking the fast is better especially
during difficulty in traveling, Hamzah bin ’Amro Al-Aslami (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْھَا) narrated,
‘I said to the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم’ (O Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم !(I find within
me the strength to fast while traveling. Would there be any blame upon me
if I were to do so?’ The Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم (said to him, “It is a
concession from Allah. Whoever takes it has done well. Whoever likes to
fast, there is no blame upon him.”Related by Muslim.
Ibn Taymiyah said “this is a strong proof for the virtue of not fast”
It is not permissible for travelers to break their fast before leaving the
residential area, hence, the saying that travelers can break their fast
before leaving home as long as they have intended to travel, is a baseless
claim that must not be followed
Dear Muslims: –
The pregnant and the breastfeeding women if they feared for their safety
they have the choice of not fasting, and they must make up for those days
by fasting them later on, and they are not obligated to feed the poor
because they fall under the ruling of those who are sick and concerned
about their health.
Also, if they feared for the well-being of their child, they can opt to not fast
and they can make up for those days later on and should feed a poor
person on behalf of each day according to the most authentic sayings of
the scholars , and Ibn Abbas May Allah be pleased with them saying “ as
for the pregnant and the breastfeeding women if they feared for their child,
they can break their fasting and feed the poor” collected by Abu Dawood.
However, if they were not able to feed the poor, then they are excused
from doing so due to their inability to do so.
Dear Muslims: –
Things that affects the individual fasting or break it are six:
First: eating and drinking and everything that falls under their category, if
a person eats and drinks while being fully aware of his fasting, then this
will render his fasting null and void
Even if a person swallows that which is between his teeth, his fasting will
be void, but if he swallows his spit even if he gathered it in his mouth and
then swallowed it, his fasting would still be valid because it is from that
which reach the stomach without a person’s choice.
Also, swallowing phlegm does not invalidate a person’s fasting because it
forms in the mouth just like the spit, however if the phlegm reached the tip
of the tongue then it should be spat out, to preserve fasting and avoid
dispute in this matter, and avoiding dispute is encouraged and when it
comes to acts of worship is required.
Furthermore, everything that enters the body whether through the mouth
as usual, the nose or the ears, this is according to Hadith of Luqait Ibn
Sobra in which he said “exaggerate in the Istinshaq (snuffling water)
except when you are fasting”. Collected by Abu Dawood
Also, medicinal gurgling of water, positional mouth spray, if it reached the
throat and not swallowed then this does not invalidate one’s fasting, and
postponing it to the night to protect one’s fasting is better.
As for the ear and nose drops, if they reached the stomach or the belly
would invalidate fasting.
Moreover, if a person wears a kohl made of seed, dropping or antimony
his fasting would still be valid according to the most authentic sayings of
the scholars, but if a person was able to feel its bitterness or its taste in
his throat or its traces were visible in the phlegm or the spit then it is
better to make up for this day by fasting another day.
Hence, avoiding wearing kohl during the day in Ramadan is better, this is
to preserve one’s fasting and protect it.
And whoever puts on any form of perfume during the day of Ramadan
while he is fasting, he fasting would still be valid, however, he should be
keen on avoiding powder perfumes and incenses because they discharge
tiny particles that can be breathed in.
Nutritious injections, and syringes spoil fasting because they function like
eating and drinking, as for the medicinal injections that do not serve as
nutrients for the body such as a penicillin, insulin, vaccines and
inoculation injections and coronavirus vaccines and such, do not break
the fast, however, it is best not to take them during the daytime of
Ramadan.
Whoever has urethral procedure either through insertion of medical
substance, solution or has a ureteroscopy, his fasting will be valid.
A male’s urethra: The male urethra is a narrow fibromuscular tube that
conducts urine, because what gets into the bladder does not reach the
stomach.
As for what is inserted through the anus such as medicinal solutions or
injections will break one’s fasting, according to the majority of the
scholars and postponing that to the nighttime is better for the servants.
Second: intentional vomiting whether it was heavy or not, and whether he
vomited food or anything else. Ibn Al-Munthir said “the scholars by
consensus have agreed that whoever intentionally vomits, his fasting will
be void.
herefore, whoever purposefully regurgitates, his fasting will be void and
he must compensate for it, but as for the one’s who was overwhelmed by
vomit and involuntarily vomited then there is no compensation upon him.
According to Abu Huraira’s Hadith (“Whoever is overcome and vomits is
not to make up for the day, but whoever vomits intentionally must make
up the day.” Reported by Abu Dawood and Al-Termithi.
Third: cupping, If a fasting person performs cupping then his fasting will
be void, according to Al-Imam Ahmad due to the Prophet’s (praise and
peace be upon him) Hadith “ ‘The cupper and the one for whom cupping is
done both break their fast.) reported by Al Bukhari, Ibn Majah, and Abu
Dawood.
As for the three Imams: Abi Hanifah, Malik and Al-Shafi’e, it is permissible
for a fasting person to perform cupping and his fasting will be valid,
according to Ibn Abbas narration that the Prophet praise and peace be
upon him had a cupping performed to him while he was fasting. Reported
by Albukhari
However, it has been mentioned in some Hadiths that which indicates that
the prophet praise and peace be upon him had a cupping performed to
him while he was fasting in Al-Qaha, then he became very weak and
declared cupping to be impermissible, thus, it is best for the fasting
person to perform cupping during the nighttime to shun confusion in
rulings and to preserve his fasting and avoid that which may spoil fasting.
Furthermore, Dialysis which entails extracting the blood and cleaning it,
then returning it inside the body after adding chemical and nutritious
substances such sugar, salt and others this procedure will render fasting
void
Phlebotomy, epistaxis, menstruation, giving a small dose of blood for
testing and analysis and skin conditions do not invalidate a person’s
fasting, because there is no specific statement regarding this matter nor
Qias applies to it
As for donating blood, it is best to be done after breaking the fast,
because it is too much and makes the person weak just like Cupping.
May Allah make you and me from amongst those who fast and prayed the
Qiyam (night) prayer out of belief and seeking the reward, I said what you
have heard and I seek forgiveness from Allah so seek His forgiveness, for
He is ever, to the often returning [to Him], Forgiving.
Part II
O Muslims: –
The fourth matter that breaks one’s fast, seminal discharge: it is
permissible for the fasting husband to kiss, touch and embrace his wife,
according to Aisha’s Hadith, she said that the Messenger of Allah (praise
and peace be upon him) used to kiss and embrace while he was fasting,
for he had more power to control his desire than any of you.
However, if the person feared by kissing and embracing his wife, that he
will be overpowered by sexual desire or that he may ejaculate quickly, or
his fasting will be spoiled, then he must avoid doing so to protect his
fasting
If he proceeded to kiss, touch and embrace his wife then he ejaculates
even without physical intercourse, his fasting will be void and he must
recompense to it, however, if he did not ejaculate his fasting is valid,
moreover, if he kept looking at that which is permissible or impermissible
then he ejaculates, his fasting will be void and he must recompense to it,
likewise if a person masturbates and then ejaculates then his fasting is
void and must recompense to it.
If a man’s pre-seminal fluid came just by a kiss, touch or a look without
sexual intercourse, his fasting is valid, according to the most authentic
sayings of scholars and the two Imams Abi Hanifah and Al-Shafi’e, this
view is also chosen by Al-Ajurry, Mohammad Al Jawzi and Sheikh Taqiyou
Ad-Deen.
The fifth: sexual intercourse is from the acts that invalidate fasting by
consensus of the scholars, and if the fasting person has a physical sexual
intercourse during the daytime of Ramadan and whether he ejaculates or
not, his fasting will be void, and he must recompense and atone for it, and
the atonement for this act is to free a slave, if it was not possible then he
must fast for two consecutive months, if he was not able to do so then he
must feed sixty poor people, according to the narration of the two Sheikhs
from the Hadith of Abu Huraira May Allah be pleased with him, but if he
was not able to do any of the above then there is no sin upon him because
with impossibility there is no obligation.
As for the wife, if she was complicit by her consent in the sexual
intercourse then her fasting is void and must atone and recompense to it,
but if she was forced into it, then there is no atonement upon her but she
must recompense to it, this is according to the most authentic sayings of
the scholars.
The sixth matter: Is mensuration and postpartum: the female who suffers
from mensuration and postpartum bleeding should break their fast and
fasting will not be accepted from them, according to the Prophet praise
and peace be upon him saying “Is it not the case that when a woman
menstruates, she neither prays nor fasts?”[12] [Reported by Al-Bukhari.
Whenever mensuration and postpartum bleeding occurs whether it
occurred during the daytime or the night ,it will still invalidate fasting, but
if her menses and postpartum bleeding stopped at night and then she
washed herself and intended to fast, her fasting is valid, however she
must make up for the days which she missed by fasting them later on, this
is according to Aisha’s ( May Allah be pleased with her) Hadith she said
“That happened to us, and we were ordered to make up for the fast, but
were not ordered to make up for the prayer.” Agreed upon.
O Muslims.
Do not diminish your fasting by false speech, sin, ignorance and
oppression, because a fasting person reward maybe equal to his sin and
oppression, therefore, Fear Allah O you who have abstained from food,
drinks and that which spoils your fasting and have adhered to that which
ought to always be avoided.
On the authority of Abu Huraira may Allah be pleased with him said, the
Prophet praise and peace be upon him said “There are people who fast
and get nothing from their fast except thirst and hunger, and there are
those who pray at night and get nothing from their prayer but a sleepless
night.”
O you have abstained from food… I wish you would have abstain from
oppression
Does fasting be of any benefit to an oppressor… whose inner is filled with
sins and mischiefs
Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet
(praise and peace be upon him) said, “If one does not eschew lies and
false conduct, Allah has no need that he should abstain from his food and
his drink. Al-Bukhari.
Jabir Ibn Abdullah Al-Ansari May Allah be pleased with him said “ when
you fast, let your hearing and eyesight fast with you, let your tongue
abstain from lies and immoral speech, avoid harming the servant and let
there be upon you a sense of calm and tranquility on the day of your
fasting, and do not let the day of your fasting and the day in which you are
not fasting alike.
May Allah make you and me from those who fast Ramadan sincerely, and
sins did not diminish the reward of their fasting.
