The words “health” and “healing” are derived from the old English word ‘hale’ which means “wholeness.” Health is a condition which results from “healing” that is a process to restore health.’ (www. Cavinbridge. org)

A research program was started in 1984, at Akbar Clinic by Ahmad Elkadi. The basic purpose of this research was to study healing effects of the Qur’an. The basic premise was the following: The Qur’an achieves its healing and health promoting effect utilizing three different approaches: the legal approach, the guiding approach and the direct healing approach.

The legal approach acts directly through its legislative functions related to the prohibition of the matters that are hazardous for health and enjoining health promoting acts.

The guiding approach of Qur’an acts through the implementation of general rules and regulation which guide the individual in the conduct of his/her daily life affairs. This put an indirect positive effect on health and well being due to emotional stability which results in a better immune system leading to a healthier physical condition.

While regarding to the healing approach, the research data indicated that listening Qur’an found to be stress reducing resulting in the relaxation of skeletal muscles, reduction of electrical potential, reduction of sweat production with decrease in electrical conductivity of the skin etc.

These and all such physiological changes were observed in the healthy volunteers during listening of Qur’an.

All these are part of direct healing effect of Qur’an.

Qur’an is the basic manuscript of Islam. These findings indirectly reveal that spirituality plays a major role in the healing process.

Another study concluded that “Healing was associated with themes of wholeness, narrative and spirituality. ( The meaning of healing : transcending suffering , Egnew TR. Ann Fam Med. 2005 )

Islam also emphasizes the importance of faith for cure.

Allah (عَزَّوَجَلَّ) says in the Qur’an:

وَلَا تَيْأَسُوا مِن رَّوْحِ اللَّـهِ ۖ إِنَّهُ لَا يَيْأَسُ مِن رَّوْحِ اللَّـهِ إِلَّا الْقَوْمُ الْكَافِرُونَ

“…And despair not of relief from Allah. Indeed, no one despairs of relief from Allah except the disbelieving people.”
[Yusuf:87]
