sugar 1 Cup
Flour1 3/4 cup
Cocoa Powder3/4 Cup
Baking powder1 1/2 tsp
Baking soda1 tsp

oil1/2 Cup
Vanilla2 tsp
hot water1 Cup

Ingredients for Chocolate Buttercream (Optional):

  • 1 cup Butter
  • 2 cups Confectioners sugar
  • 2 to 4 tbsp Cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp Vanilla

Method for Cake:

  • Preheat the oven to 175 C.
  • Grease 2 8” pans. 
  • Combine all dry ingredients in one bowl, and combine all wet ingredients in in another bowl (except hot water)
  • Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix till they are fully incorporated. You can use a hand whisk to mix this cake.
  • Slowly add hot water and mix till fully incorporated.
    *The batter will be  very runny

    Bake for 30 to 35minutes or till a toothpick inserted comes out with very few cooked crumbs.

Method for Chocolate Buttercream:

  • With your hand mixer beat the butter till it doubles in volume and becomes pale in colour.
  • Slowly add the sugar till it fully incorporates.
  • Add Cocoa till it fully incorporates.
  • Add salt and vanilla and keep beating.

Total Time spent on beating in air should be 10 to 15 minutes.
Once cakes are out of the oven let them cool completely.
Add frosting once the cake is fully cooled.
