We find different narrations on the birth of the Prophet ﷺ. The most agreed upon date of his birth is NOT 12th of Rabiul Awwal. Rather it is the 9th of Rabi ul Awwal. In a hadith, the Prophet ﷺ has mentioned the day of his birth which was a Monday. If we are to research this, we find that a Monday fell on the 9th of RabiulAwwal. Hence, the scholars agree upon 9th as the birthdate of our beloved Prophet ﷺ.
Many sequence of events occurred on his birth.
- He was born at night. His mother, Syeda Amna was at her husband’s house and the wife of Abdur Rahman bin Awf, a renowned midwife, was with her. The most authentic of narrations prove the midwife spoke of the birth of the Prophet ﷺ. She says, “There was a certain light, a certain nur at the time of this boy’s birth. This nur lightened up the entire east and west.”
- She also states in an authentic narration that, “It was night time and there were stars that could be seen in the sky. And these very stars came so close to the earth, I felt as if these stars would just touch the ground.”
- Another authentic narration says that a Jewish scholar was present in Makkah at the time of the birth of the Prophet ﷺ. He noticed some signs and the next day said to the people of Makkah, “There has been born a child in this land who is the leader of the world. He is the one who the entire world has waited for. When the Prophet ﷺ’s grandfather, Abdul Mutallib was informed, he said, “My grandson has been born and I’ve named him Muhammad ﷺ.” The Jewish man requested for the boy to be shown to him. He then removed the cloth from the infant’s back and rubbed his hand on it. There he witnessed the mark of Prophethood and fell unconscious. When he regained consciousness, he said, “Good news to you, O Arabs. Allah, the Lord of the Universes, has taken the leadership of the world away from Bani Israel and now it has been granted to you. The is the last Prophet the world has been waiting for. We used to think this honor would be given to the people of Bani Israel but Allah (عَزَّوَجَلَّ) has honored you with it and not us.
All these authentic narrations prove the Prophet ﷺ’s excellence or his special role in the world.
Another incident is mentioned but is in a weak narration, it is said that there used to be a fireplace or furnace in Persia that remained ablaze. It was ablaze for 1000 years. At the moment of the birth of the Prophet ﷺ, the fire extinguished. The person who took care of that area, a scholar, asked the people to find out what special incident had taken place that night. It was found out several months later that a boy was born in Makkah. Talk had started to spread of how special this boy is.
Hence, the conclusion is that:
- The birth of the Prophet ﷺ marked a special event in the Arab history leading to some very profound sequence of events.
- The day of the Prophet ﷺ ‘s birth was a Monday.
- The date of his birth is 9 RabiulAwwal as agreed upon by the majority of the scholars.
